Abstract

The integration of blockchain technology into Business Process Management (BPM) has attracted significant attention due to the transparency and immutability offered by distributed ledger technologies. Numerous studies have proposed blockchain-based workflow engine architectures to execute business processes directly on-chain. These adopt distinct design decisions for process instance deployment, resulting in a diverse architectural variants with significantly different gas cost. In this paper we propose to give fine-grained control to process modelers regarding how the control flow logic and process data are distributed across one or multiple smart contracts. To demonstrate the practical applicability of the approach, we compare two deployment configurations of the same blockchain-based crowdfunding process and examine the resulting deployment and execution costs.
